| John MARSHALL - Mate of the "Queen"
On the 19th of October 1866 the “Peterhead Sentinel” reported the safe arrival of the seal and whale fishing vessel “Queen” after an absence of nearly 19 months. The Mate was John Marshall. During the whole period they had caught no fish, seals or whales and were only able to survive because of the knowledge that John Marshall had of the food caches placed by his father - also John Marshall

In 1850, John Marshall was taken on as mate on the Lady Franklin, commanded by William Penny, on a search which was headline news, to find the missing explorer Sir John Franklin and his expedition in search of the North-West passage.

Towards the bottom of the face of the Memorial Stone erected by James Marshall is the following for his son, also called James "Also of their lamented son, JAMES, who was drowned in Dunbar Bay.
With the Jane of Peterhead on the 14th Oct 1881 Aged 20 years." This is the story behind those few sad words.
